The Virginia CZM Program sets aside $200,000 each year for land acquisition. The Program seeks parcels that are in need of protection because they contain rare habitat types and because they afford opportunities for passive public access and public education.
Since 1991, Virginia CZM grants have resulted in the acquisition of over 2,349 acres. Below is a table of land acquisitions funded by the program, including match funding. For more detail on the purchase, a link is provided to a project description page.
The Virginia CZM Program also distributes funding for acquisition awarded through the federal Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program.
The Program is in the process of developing a CELCP Plan for Virginia. This plan will be required to receive future federal funding. These plans outline land conservation priorities within the state’s coastal zone and an evaluation process for proposals submitted at the state level.
