Advanced Paddler Route:

Queen Sound to Greenbackville Harbor
Route Description:
Launch at the Queen Sound Landing boat ramp and head East along the Chincoteague Causeway until you reach the Queen Sound bridge. Pass under the bridge and continue along the main channel until you have a clear view of the mainland to your Left (West). Pick a suitable route through the small salt marsh islands as you paddle toward the mainland. This area is not marked with channel markers, and there are several possible routes to take. Be aware of the effects of tide on the water levels in this shallow bay and surrounding waters. As you reach the mainland shoreline, turn Right and follow the shoreline Northward. After you pass Horntown Landing, look for Swans Gut and then Powell Creek on your left. Access to these creeks is limited by the tide, but they provide excellent opportunities for coastal exploration and wildlife viewing. Continue North to the village of Greenbackville. The harbor is protected by a long, low breakwater that you must paddle around. Stay to your right as you enter the harbor to avoid powerboat traffic in this bustling commercial marina. You will want to use the first boat ramp you see on your left as you enter the harbor.
Note: Advanced paddlers can continue from Greenbackville to the E.A. Vaughn Kayak Trail at George Island Landing near Stockton, Maryland.
