Project Title:
Coastal Resiliency: Adapting to Climate Change in Hampton Roads
Project Description as Proposed:
Climate change will have several impacts on the Hampton Roads region. Higher temperatures, rising sea level, and changing precipitation patterns will have significant effects on many sectors and environments in this region. In order to effectively address the impacts of climate change, the Hampton Roads region will need to develop a coastal resiliency and climate adaptation plan. This plan will build on the previous Focal Area Project’s research into climate change impacts and adaptation options as well as its public outreach and stakeholder engagement components. This project will consist of three main parts. The first will be an expanded public engagement effort that will combine direct engagement with organizations with a new effort to engage the public using HRPDC’s ongoing environmental education efforts under the HRGreen program. The second will be an assessment of sector-specific impacts and planning efforts to assess where and how climate change impacts can be incorporated into the region’s many long-range planning efforts. The third will be the development of an adaptive management plan that will identify expected impacts and when they will occur, identify planning horizons for infrastructure and planning decisions, and develop best practices and recommendations for incorporating adaptive management for climate change into existing planning processes.
