Virginia Green Campgrounds

How to Join Core Activities Participating Campgrounds

Campers generally have an appreciation for the outdoors and are sure to appreciate green activities.  Nature is interwined with campgrounds, which provide many unique opportunities to minimize their environmental impact by making simple, commonsense changes, almost all of which have the potential to save money.

To become a Virginia Green Campground, complete either the fillable MS Word version or the Adobe PDF version of the application and submit it to VirginiaGreen@deq.virginia.gov.

Core Requirements for Virginia Green Campgrounds

Virginia Green Campgrounds is a self-certification program where campgrounds verify that they are at a minimum practicing the Virginia Green Campgrounds core activities and hopefully doing much more!  These are the core activities:

  • Recycle:  provide an opportunity for guests to recycle cans, bottles, newspapers, etc.
  • Reduce solid waste: be actively working to reduce its solid waste generation
  • Use water efficiently: be working towards reducing its water use
  • Conserve energy:  be taking steps to reduce its energy use
  • Green events:  provide standard recycling and encourage event planners to minimize environmental impacts whenever possible
  • Environmental education / green signage:  take advantage of unique opportunity to educate guests about their surrounding environment and how guests interact with the environment

Guests to Virginia Green Campgrounds can expect that the facility has at least the core activities in place.  Participants are encouraged to tell us about any green activities they have undertaken and these are includeed in the participants profile, which appears on our website.  Consumers can then choose a facility that offers the green amenities they value.

How to Join

Joining is easy.  Membership in the program is FREE.  Simply complete the Virginia Green Campgrounds application (MS Word or Adobe PDF) and email the completed checklist to VirginiaGreen@deq.virginia.gov.  Once you are approved, we will send you a certificate for display at your facility and list your facility below.  Your facility will aslo be included on the Virginia Tourism Corportation's website as a Virginia Green facility if you have a listing on Virginia.org.

The application is a checklist of common-sense, good ideas for you to consider.  Please feel free to tell us about any other things you are doing to minimize your environmental impacts.  The great thing is that almost every activity on the list has the potential to save your facility money.
