Natural gas is a domestically available, clean-burning fuel. Natural gas is primarily composed of methane (CH4) but contains other hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane and other gases such as nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water vapor.
What is a Natural Gas Vehicle?
Natural gas vehicles are fueled with either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). Compared with vehicles fueled by conventional diesel and gasoline, natural gas vehicles can produce significantly lower amounts of harmful emissions, such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and toxic and carcinogenic pollutants as well as the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
LNG fuel systems typically are used only with heavy-duty vehicles (such as buses and refuse trucks). CNG fuel systems have been used in both heavy and light-duty vehicles; however, the production of light-duty CNG vehicles has declined in the last few years. Currently, the Honda Civic GX sedan is the only light-duty CNG vehicle commercially available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has called the natural gas Civic GX the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle on Earth. Using compressed natural gas (CNG) as vehicle fuels increases energy security, paves the way for fuel cell vehicles, and improves public health and the environment.
Are There any Natural Gas Fueling Stations in Virginia?
In Virginia, we currently do not have any LNG fueling stations, but there are a number of (mostly private or government) CNG fueling stations. Click one of the links below for a list of CNG locations in Virginia.
