Brief Project Description

The Town of Washington wastewater service area is currently served through on-site septic tank and drainfield systems. The on-site treatment systems will be replaced by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and collection system currently under construction.  Upon completion the Town will own and operate the WWTP. The design flow of this facility will be 0.06 MGD.

This Grant Agreement will cost share the nutrient removal components included in this project. The collection system and non nutrient related components of the WWTP will not be cost shared by this Grant Agreement. The project components addressed by this Grant Agreement will include treatment technologies that will reduce the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) levels under the amounts established DEQ’s Waste Load Allocation.

The WWTP will utilize a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology to provide biological treatment and TN reduction (nitrification and denitrification) of the wastewater. Tertiary filtration will be provided to polish the effluent by removing biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids during peak loading conditions. This filtration will also significantly lower the wastewater TP concentrations.

Disinfection will be accomplished by ultraviolet (UV) disinfection

After the final SBR stage the solids will be sent to an aerated sludge holding tank. After aeration and settling the sludge will be pumped from the tank and transferred to a larger wastewater treatment plant for disposal. This transfer will be completed by a septic tank hauler on a routine schedule.
