The Department of Environmental Quality, through the State Water Control Board, regulates water resources and water pollution in Virginia. Permitting for water protection involves the issuance of Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) permits and Virginia Pollution Abatement permits for discharges of pollutants to state waters; Virginia Water Protection permits for impacts to wetlands and streams related to development activities or surface water withdrawals; and ground water withdrawal permits for significant withdrawals from ground water in designated ground water management areas.
Additional information is available on these water permits:
The water compliance programs ensure that activities regulated by DEQ under a permit are in compliance with water protection requirements. Compliance activities include inspecting permitted facilities and reviewing required reports to ensure the owner is in compliance with permit conditions to protect water resources. Though minor corrective actions can be taken outside of formal enforcement, sometimes compliance activities result in formal enforcement actions to ensure that corrective actions are taken.
Electronic DMR Submissions (e-DMR)
VPDES permit holders can now submit their monthly Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) online, as an alternative to paper form submission. Please follow this link for more information about this program.
