Canaan Valley Institute's Stakeholder Services and Assessment Division provides technical assistance and educational programs that help communities and organizations identify, develop, and implement sustainable solutions to serious water issues that affect their daily lives.
Specific organizational assistance and support may include:

Canaan Valley Institute seeks to support local stakeholder organizations committed to restoring and protecting the natural resources of their watersheds. Therefore applications must address water quality or quantity issues or aquatic habitat. CVI encourages groups to submit projects that can show quantifiable/measurable outcomes. Priority will be given to projects that address rural wastewater treatment and stream restoration.

The Catalog of Federal Funding Sources for Watershed Protection website is a searchable database of financial assistance sources (grants, loans, cost-sharing) available to fund a variety of watershed protection projects. To select funding programs for particular requirements, use either of two searches below. One is based on subject matter criteria, and the other is based on words in the title of the funding program.
Criteria searches include the type of organization (e.g., non-profit groups, private landowner, state, business), type of assistance sought (grants or loans), and keywords (e.g., agriculture, wildlife habitat).

| The Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund Program provides grants of up to $200,000 to organizations and local governments working on a local level to protect and improve watershed health in the Chesapeake Bay basin, while building citizen-based resource stewardship. The Program is managed in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Program with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Forest Service and other partners. Proposals are due Friday, February 29, 2008. Interested applicants are encouraged to participate in a webcast workshop on Wednesday, January 23. The Royal Bank of Canada is offering a series of grants to applicants who have water quality activities in the United States and other counties through their Blue Water ProjectTM. There are two types of grant applications available to the public.
Leadership Grants: Ranging from $25,000 to $500,000, these grants focus on watershed protection and/or access to safe drinking water and are available to local, regional, national or trans-border organizations for projects in any of the countries in which RBC is located, including Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and the UK.
Community Action Grants: Ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, these grants are focused on watershed protection and are available to local or community organizations in Canada, United States or the Caribbean.

Virginia Environmental Endowment
Virginia Program: The Virginia Program supports community action, reinforced and informed by research and education. The program focuses on water quality research and monitoring of water quality conditions; land and open space conservation; Chesapeake Bay fisheries conservation, research, and education; and environmental education.
Virginia Mini-Grant Program: The Virginia Mini-Grant Program has enabled thousands of citizens to become actively involved in solving environmental problems in their own hometowns. With grants of $5,000 or less, schools have initiated environmental science courses and outdoor classroom projects, volunteers have monitored water quality in dozens of local streams and rivers, and communities have developed innovative strategies to ensure environmental quality is improved in their community.

Submission Requirements - Each proposal must include the following information:
- A cover letter identifying the applicant, project title, grant request, matching funds, project schedule, and whether the proposal is being submitted to the Virginia Program or the Virginia Mini-Grant Program.
- A project description, limited to five pages, clearly stating the need for the project, goals and objectives and how they will be achieved, and relevance to other work being done in the field.
- A description of the organization, names and qualifications of key project staff, a list of the members of the governing board, the current operating budget, and a copy of the current tax-exempt ruling from the Internal Revenue Service, if applicable.
- A line-item budget for the proposed project, showing total project costs, the amount and proposed allocation of grant funds requested from the Endowment, and all sources and amounts of matching funds, which must equal or exceed the requested grant.
- The project schedule, with specific beginning and ending dates for requested grant support.
- A detailed plan for evaluating and disseminating project results, for continuing project activities, and for raising future financial support, if applicable.

| The Virginia Naturally program offers several grant opportunities designed for schools with K-12 students to do environmental education activities. The grant programs also look for schools to partner with local community organizations and volunteer groups to promote capacity for delivering and sustaining high quality, meaningful environmental education related to water and watersheds. |
