Route Description:

Launch at the Wisharts Point boat ramp and follow the channel markers out toward Powells Bay and Ballast Narrows. As you pass channel marker #5 head due North into the southern end of Cockles Creek. Stay in the main channel of this wide creek as navigation in this area can be tricky. Notice the Chincoteague Causeway ahead. As you approach the causeway, look for an opening in the marsh to your right (East) that opens into Shelly Bay. You should be able to see the boat ramp and dock facility at Queen Sound. Paddle across the bay to the boat ramp. Be aware of the effects of tide on the water level in this wide, shallow bay and look out for recreational fisherman and other power boaters.

Note: The Cockles Creek section of this paddle is not marked with channel markers. This route should only be used by Advanced paddlers who are able to navigate effectively with a map and compass or a GPS (global positioning system).
